JOEY RECEIVES THE GOLD HUMANISM AWARD

Dear Joseph, I am very pleased to inform you that you have been awarded the honor of membership in the University of Arizona College of Medicine Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) for 2014-15! Congratulations! You, and your fellow honorees represent what we feel will be one of the most prestigious awards the College can bestow. A formal letter will be coming in the mail, but I wanted to let you know now so you can participate in next weeks Solidarity Day for Compassion Patient Care! The GHHS program began in 2001 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to honor humanistic values in medical students, residents and faculty. It is similar in structure to AOA but emphasizes excellence in “humanistic attitudes such as empathy, compassion, respect, altruism and integrity.” We are delighted to have a chapter at the U of A. The GHHS organizing committee selected you for the award after a careful review of surveys submitted by your peers and of your academic record. This honor is the greater for being based upon a broad sample of opinion of those who know you well and work with you daily, as well as an objective review of your performance. An induction ceremony will be held to confer this honor sometime in April and additional information regarding the ceremony will be sent soon. Furthermore, this honor will be included in your MSPE (Dean’s Letter). We will be sending out an email announcing the GHHS recipients on Friday, February 7, 2014. If you do not want your name listed, please contact Cazandra Zaragoza prior to this date. I congratulate you warmly on the receipt of this honor, and look forward to working with you throughout the year and hopefully during next weeks activities! Andy Andreas A. The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) honors medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers and other exemplars recognized for “demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.” Organized to elevate the values of humanism and professionalism within the field of medicine, the Society is fast becoming integrated into the medical educational environment. The GHHS is a steadfast advocate for humanism through activities on campus and involvement with its membership. Creating a chapter of the GHHS signifies to students and faculty that an institution places high value on the interpersonal skills and attitudes that are essential for excellent patient care.Inspiration for the GHHS began in the late 1990s, when medical educators and residency program directors expressed the need for a mechanism to identify applicants for internships and residencies who have outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills. Thanks to a series of grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, deans, medical educators, and experts in assessment were convened to explore and research the viability of an honor society to promote humanistic values and behaviors. GHHS Mission: The GHHS is dedicated to recognize, support and promote the values of humanism and professionalism in medicine. The Society is committed to working within and beyond medical education to inspire, nurture and sustain lifelong advocates and activists for patient-centered medical care.
